hey there @GambleFree good on you for jumping into the forums and sharing your journey with us. It sounds like you've really come to a place of change. It's great you're starting to do some education around the harms of gambling and how anyone can fall into the loosing cycle.

Getting started can sometimes take a bit of panning, do you have a clear idea of what you'll do to manage urges to bet when they hit?

I know members such as @smokey86 have done a lot of work around recognising triggers and understanding the "why", likewise @AGHS has had a good run with counselling and reaching out for extra support. They might have some extra advice for you here.

Let us know how you're travelling! You might find it useful to start you're own thread and use it as a way to keep track of how you're going!

Yes, thanks for replying. I’ve actually developed a strategy to cope up with the urges and to say goodbye to gambling for good. As a lot of people here would know that when you gamble in casino, your money seems nothing but chips and in online betting your money seems nothing but numbers. I’ve decided to make a list of things that I actually like, things that makes me happy which can be bought with money.
For instance I love playing games on my PS5. Average cost for a PS5 game these days is a 100 bucks. A nice pair of tshirt and shorts is a 100 bucks and I’m sure everyone will have stuff they love which they can buy for a 100 dollars.
So, when I have the urge to spend that $100 on gambling, I would look at the list and be like oh there is plenty of other things I can buy for a 100 dollars which will actually make me happy. So why to spend it on gambling that I know for a fact now will go away no matter how much you win, eventually you lose that money. So yeah, here’s my advise to anyone that need it. Hope it helps someone :)

P.S. I’m fairly new here, so no idea how to start my own thread or how I can actually help more people who would be struggling with gambling addiction :)

    Hi @GambleFree

That's a great idea! To picture what else you could be doing instead with that money!

With the little money we have already saved, we have booked a little family trip to Cairns.

If I was still gambling, then there's no way we could afford that.

My distraction today was going out for lunch with a long time friend and our family.

Only just got home and now too buggered to do anything else, apart from maybe watch the footy later lol.

    Good to know that @smokey86

For me as I was heavily gambling on sports. I’ve decided to take a break from watching sports. You won’t believe but I pretty much gambled on every AFL game this season but I had no interest in watching the grand final and I didn’t care who win or who lose. I’m shifting my interest from sports to watching Netflix or spending more time playing games on my PS5 at least for sometime. Few months later, I might start watching sports again, when I know that gambling isn’t an issue for me anymore.
Also, today I sat down with my wife and we planned our budget till new year’s eve and we’ve set an amount we need to have in savings. If we meet that target amount, we both gonna go for a nice dinner or possibly a short holiday :)
