    Need a change!

    Sun Oct 20, 2019 7:11 pm

    Hi All,

I'm here because I deperately need a change in my life, I'm a 35 year old male and I have a pokie machine addiction. I'd only ever play them once or twice a month throwing 1000 at them in a bender like activity, I'd win, lose, lose, win, lose etc ect you know the routine. Lately it's gotten worse where I'm doing this every weekend and my savings are dwindling. My father passed away recently and I have lost my way a bit, so to speak. I gambled last night and lost $3600 on the pokies, on the way home I thought about suicide and what would happen if I can't bring this addiction to heel! I hate these F#&king things, sorry about the language but right now I feel like smashing them with a hammer - I don't understand how they can be legal?! Surely the gov needs to reform it's gaming policy :( years ago I would go out to pub/rsl and laugh at the people putting in their cash and think to myself how can these people be so silly!? Now, here I am, I've become those people. Sitting here in gamblers hangover I could have done so much with that money. Watching online videos and hearing about footy player Nathan Hindmarsh has also suffered the same addiction and beat it inspires me to become a better person and to seek counceling. I'll try to check in every sunday.

    Thanks

    Hi Joe

    Welcome to the forum,

You can bring the "addiction to heel".

Have you watched Ka Ching pokie Nation? This program shows how the machines are made to be addictive. Re-programming our minds and banishing them is a long, slow process.-.. Well at the beginning it feels that way... l'm 2 years in gambling free mode and when looking back it feels so long ago.

One of the methods I found helpful was to try and concentrate on the moment.. be aware of what s happening and keep busy. Keeping busy can even be just sitting quietly and enjoying the peace. I remember the anxiety and some new confusing feelings that emerged when l first stopped gambling.... knowing why they happen helped get through them day by day sometimes even hour by hour.

Two years on ... with some of the things thats happening in my life... I think I could easily have escaped.'these "REAL Life" feelings by going to play those demon machines to forget. But being aware of the consequences ... usually by reading stories here ... helps keep me strong.

You can do this ... stay strong!

All the best on your journey .

    Mona.

Thankyou for your kind words Mona and Ducky. I have received a referal to a specialised councilor and will be booking in shortly for regular sessions.

I will definitly check out the suggestion to watch Kaching as it looks like it will give me some insight as to how corrupt and sinister these machines are.

    Thanks :)

    Hey @@Joeb9 ,

How are you tracking? Sounds like you are ready to give up and at that point where you'll actually give it a good crack!
Definitely sad when you realize you've become "one of them", "that person".

Sorry to hear about your dad, I can only imagine how hard that must be.

I totally agree about how can they be legal.
    They absolutely destroy lives.

It wouldn't be fair to others who can control themselves to lose the oppertunity to have a flutter every now and then, just like alcohol just because some people cant handle drink and are alcoholics others shouldn't loose their right.

Though I do reckon gambling destroys way more lives than alcohol.

How you were talking about reforms. That's exactly it, whilst I don't think they should be illegal I reckon
    1. They should bring back acceptance or $1 coins.

    2. Maximum note currency should be a $20.

    3. There should be a maximum bet of $1 per spin.

That's what I can think of atm. But yes I dont think they should remove them, I don't think venues should be able to make so much money from them.

When I was in Victoria a few years back, the pub I was at you had to go to the bar to get cash out and the maximum each time was $200. Don't know if that's everywhere or was just there.

Hope you are going well on the straight and narrow.
Lot's of support here, All the best and keep us posted.

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for the kind words all! I haven't gambled so far, so I'm tracking along well I think. I do think about it though, especially when I get bored but I try to switch my thoughts elsewhere which help to some degree. Staying strong!
    Cheers!
