    Fri Nov 08, 2019 9:08 am

Hey all, i noticed i cant find any mention of online gambling in my brief scan through the forum. Im talking online pokies in particular. I know they are supposed to be banned in australia but there are many ways around that. Anyway i have my own story to tell in this matter but wasnt sure if this is the right space? Any help is much appreciated!

It’s the right place. Share away.

In my opinion they are probably worse as they online you don’t even have to leave your house to play them

Sorry it took me a while to get around to this.

In the past i had a major problem with the land based pokies. Started with winning a jackpot with change and well you guys know how that story goes, thousands upon thousands chasing that jackpot again...

A few years down the track i discovered you could gamble at online casinos and that was an absolute disaster. So easy to for things to get out of control there. But it was a lot more entertaining with the variety of options and was hard to ignore particularly on the weekends when there was nothing going on socially. I did however manage to get really lucky and have a big win one night and that basically cleared the slate for me wiping out the debt i had accumulated gambling. I walked away after that sucessfully for a few years.

I had another issue with the land based pokies after my girlfriend wanted to try them and it sent me on a tilt where i basically cleaned myself out and accumulated more debt. I sort help back then and actually saw a counsellor once. It made me feel ashamed and set me on the right path again. It has taken about 3 years to undo that damage financially. Gamble free for that time.

Last year around august i discovered that there was people streaming pokies and casino stuff online and it made feel guilty watching them but at the same time it scratched that itch and did not cost anything so i felt there was no harm. I did actually try to sign on for online gambling again then but discovered its actually illegal(sort of) in australia now and online casinos wont take australian players any more. Which in a way was a relief because it removed that temptation.

Then i found an australia streamer and that changed things because he showed how you can still get access to some of those sites. Its been a bit of a rollercoaster since then and at times its totally out of control.

When i wrote the first post i had set fire to 15k i savings and was basically having a panic attack on how to tell my wife about this. I actually did something silly and borrowed some money to gamble more and got extremely lucky winning about 10k back. Ive already gone through 2.5k of that in the last 2 days trying to get the rest back but what i really need is a way to put a stop to this before i go back to 0 again.

Most sites you can self exclude (and i have done this a lot of times), but in the online world there is a million more to take your money. Then theres the added risk that the new one will just be a scam anyway (more so than pokies in general). I have looked at the software at a glance and balked at the fact it cost money (ironic i know lol). But im more concerned i will find a way to get around it/uninstall use another device etc. I am computer literate.

I can control myself 99% of the time but once i get going its like im possessed as a lot of people say on here and its so easy to so much damage in so little time. Appreciate any thoughts and tips and thanks for listening :)

    Hi Helpmehelpmyself,
    Thankyou for sharing your experience.
It sounds like your main urges are fueled by trying to win money back that you have spent. In the process you have found yourself continuously spending and losing that money with little to no return.
This is where acceptance can come in. Accepting that the money that is spent is now gone and accepting that no amount of gambling would bring that back. Changing your perception of gambling is important, many people can look at it as 'bonus money' but in reality that's simply not true.
Investigating whether there are other urges that are present for you can be useful. Many people gamble to ease stress, cure boredom etc. Identify these so that you can figure out other alternatives to cope.
I understand that some blocking sights can involve a fee, but it can be beneficial.

Many people that struggle with urges, find it helpful to call our helpline at those times where they most likely would gamble. 1800 858 858

I also found myself watching people live stream their online wins.

I started filming myself playing and had a few big wins. But then Melbourne Cup cane around and I had a nice win on that and I thought to myself this is too easy. I’m wasting all my time off in pubs and casinos let me punt on something that I can control not a random machine.

I won a bit at first then started losing and chasing. Chasing very hard until I had lost a small fortune in a 3-4 month period.

I have now realised I can never gamble again. It was also coping mechanism and trying to escape facing things in my life. Be honest with yourself and start to focus on how you’re feeling when the urge to gamble comes along. Good luck giving up

I had a look. That is just a load of rubbish government just trying to funnel gambling losses into its coffers. Besides ive never had any trouble getting winnings from these illegals.. also as everyone says there is many ways around it. I would prefer they ban everything.. but we know that will not happen.
