Hello, I have a rather complicated problem

    Fri Jan 11, 2013 3:27 pm

    Hi everyone,

I have been battling this problem for a while and have gone through various stages. One point i was maxed out on all my credit cards and steal money from my parents to now where i have a little control but escalates quickly. I was exposed to gambling when i started working in a casino as a dealer to make money during my degree. There would be periods of time when i wouldnt gamble but when i get lonely or depressed or have a bad night i gamble online.

I started gambling around 2006 and i estimate that i would have lost over $80000 which is massive for a 25 year old. I still work at the casino in tables games but as a supervisor/manager but started up hard in december 2012 and was winning but then last week i ended up losing $3000 in a stereotypical gambling addict binge. I immediately sort out counseling online here and they referred me to a local counselor in town. But i cant shake off the thoughts of that money i lost. Such plans for 2013 and off to the worst possible start. Its a constant battle with the guilt and grief of what i am and what i could have been. I still view the casino/hotel industry as my future but am i being foolish with this big skeleton in my closet. Who knows only time will tell.

    Hello Raveen.

Well, that really is a complicated problem. One of my good friends actually became a Crown Casino dealer because he wanted a way to AVOID gambling (all crown staff, dealers or otherwise, are prohibited from gambling in the complex). I have also been on "crown dealer" holidays with to other casinos around australia. Man, can some of those gamble or what! Another friend of mine lost 8k playing blackjack on her first night there. She made it up the next night. Guess what happened the third night? She lost 20k and I had to almost drag her out of the complex (she left after yelling at me and telling me to f*ck off).

Being exposed to gambling when you have problems with it yourself is like tempting fate to the extreme. I know many crown dealers through my friends and I hazard a guess that at least 50% of them have gambling issues of their own.

Surely there is some employee assistance program in place for you that you might be able to access?

OMG I lost $3k on New Years Eve and have been broke since payday yesterday and now all i can think of is trying to win it back but i know that even if i do win it back i'll just lose it again in 5 mins.

Trying to control something very dangerous here....

The thing about gambling is you keep going until your broke

    hey Redav and Anna

I was reading through your posts and I was really interested in how you described it as "something dangerous". What exactly is it that's dangerous?

And I also wondered how you both try and control it?

    Just curious :-)))

    Hi JJ

Its dangerous to me because gambling changes my personality. Like now because if i lose which i always usually do i become bitter and angry and push people in my life away. I've had suicidal thoughts to try and get rid of dealing with everything. Also gambling can make you lose alot not just money but if you have money you keep going so its dangerous to lose everything you have worked for.

Trying to control it day 17 only so I'm no expert on this. I guess just keep trying to think of it as why do i go because its definitly not to win if i keep going until i lose...

Its friggin hard....

    Hey Anna,

Changing food and lifestyle is the BEST idea. I've never been a 'fit' person, but this year decided to make a change. Exercise seriously has THE most productive effects on every aspect of my life, particularly my headspace.

What sorts of things is it doing for you? Is it helping?

    Hi Bri

well being fit kind of equals to being healthy which a healthy body equals a healthy mind so for me if i feel good about myself i probably wont want to punish myself with gambling and depressing things.

I started gambling after i put 25kgs on and was bored because i didnt want to go anywhere with my partner (now ex) or when they were working i would go to kill time at first but then it became worse and worse and i felt down about everything.

Now being just a little bit more healthy and exercising has made me feel less depressed and well i'm making it a ifestyle change not just a diet so i can stick to it forever. That way if i make this change im hoping i can not gamble as part of feeling better about myself.
