    A habit worth knocking

    Wed Nov 27, 2019 5:51 pm

Im a gambler, i like horses and sports win some lose some in the last year pokies have gripped me and torn me a bit. I continue to go to the casino get the comps have the vip card offer rewards etc that temps me back and i play to get that big win and when i do i find another machine. Even taking a sick day off or 2 to feed my habit which i havnt told my partner about and thats made me selfish offering excuses all the time being away from home. A new years resolution is to reduce the visits which will be hard and do more walking but how do others beat the habit?

Welcome to the forum Ryan .

It would be difficult to live with constant sneaking around to play the pokies. Honesty is one aspect of beating the habit. Beating the habit will change you as a person and your partner may well notice this change. The anxiety of getting through the first few weeks are not really nice feelings and your partner may well wonder what's up with you!

Read some of the posts in family and friends section of the forums and you will notice that many partners do know' / suspect and search for help, are often empathetic and understanding. Your partner may well be the best person to lead on BUT it is understanding if you feel uncomfortable to tell her just now. It might help to ring the gambling helpline ( 1800 858 858 ) to help you get through and advice on things that are bothering you.

All the best on your journey Ryan!

    Hi @@ryan1019
    Welcome to the forums!

Sounds like you're hooked on that hope to win big. Have you considered self-exclusion where you can potentially ban yourself from hotels/casinos etc. This acts a barrier to gambling.
We also offer some gambling counselling and financial counselling free of charge. This can be useful to consider.

Good on you for reaching out

Thanks for the reply and read other posts where others are fighting the fight. It’s especially hard when at work when people at work mention all there assets and you can say set for life when here we go again start from scratch- im happy super cannot be touched. Exclusion is a tuff thing to do and will consider this.

You seem "focused" on other people's assests ... something you too can have when you cease gambling. It's a goal that can help your recovery! Use it to give you strength to fight the urges.

    Hi @@ryan1019
Thank you for sharing your story and I hope you are discovering your own way to kick your habit by learning how others do on this forum.
I was wondering what do you think you are getting from gambling ? - in other words what you like about gambling?
And on the contrary what you don't like about gambling?

They all sound quite simple questions, but sometimes it can be helpful to be curious what underlies your gambling, so you can see a long term change!
Welcome to this forum and please keep us updated!

What i like about gambling is the wins makes one feel in front and in control, then theres the misses when await the next pay day. Xmas coming and there will be a work break up and drinks that wont cost so all good. What does get me down is putting in effect into work and savings gone, at least super one cant touch.
Since my new job 1 and a half years ago drinking more and gambling extra.

Yeah the new job is more stressful and usually go with a mate to the casino those times more in control. Here we go ladbrokes offering 50% match deposit offer.

You can put blocks on gambling advertisements on your phone.

Temptations will come your way and fighting the urges is "hard" but easier to handle over time.
