    I won grand jackpot but...

    Wed May 01, 2019 12:50 am

    hello everyone,

I am in my early 30s
I won grand jackpot (~$14k) 2 weeks ago,
however, after doing some calculations, it didn't take long for me to realise that I've lost more than ~$30k on pokies over the last 12 months
after winning that grand jackpot, I've already spent another 5k, kept going back thinking I may be able to win again.
I feel sick... 30k is a lot of money... maybe I need to think of it as an expensive life lesson... could have been 300k if I had more money

Hi perfecttraveller, it is always the house that wins, the regular gambler can never be ahead. An eye opener for me was tonight too, I received my member’s card statement to a casino I go to on weekends - It shows the amount of money I have fed through their machines, the hours spent & my losses & wins. I have to say, it’s shocking. It shows that I’ve fed 50k into their house over the last 5 years & my wins have been very minimal which just goes back in anyway. In these past 5 years, my biggest jackpot there was only 600, got about twice. Isn’t that pathetic considering how much I spent ?The house makes you think you’ve won big when in reality it’s little peanuts! Here’s another great example, my dad is a regular gambler on pokies at his local venue. He has won a few big ones over last 20 years ranging from 6k - 18k but all of it goes back in within a couple of weeks as then he (like most) visit everyday for a chase. His overall losses are 500k, maybe more. Isn’t that sad? I am very upset with myself as I went to a venue yesterday & lost my money, my last dollar. The worse part was that after I got off a machine I was on for 2 hours, a man got on & won major on it, 2k. I felt sick to my stomach but I don’t want to be envious, he’s probably got the same gambling problems we’ve got, so good luck to him. As for me, I just want to ban myself, I am so sick of being robbed time & time again. As said, you can never beat the house so it’s better to keep your money & find a new interest instead.

    Hello @perfecttraveller

I'm Calvin one of the facilitators here on the forums.

Good on you for reaching out for support and thankyou for sharing your experience with everyone, it takes a lot of courage to do so.

It can be quite confronting acknowledging gambling as an issue and coming to terms with the amount of money spent overtime.

it helps to look at what your main urges or motivations are to go and gamble. What would you say your urges are? How do you think you can better manage them in the future?
Are there any activities/hobbies you enjoy doing that can substitute the gambling?

Its good that you have viewed this as a type of lesson. We can only learn and grow from the lessons we learn.

    Kind regards,

    Calvin
