    Addicted Australia: Episode 2

    Tue Nov 17, 2020 4:22 pm

    Hello everyone! :)

Last week the first episode aired of Addicted Australia, and we got to know a little about each participant and their life experiences through different types of addiction.
Tonight at 8:30pm the second episode of the 'Addicted Australia' Documentary will be airing on SBS.

For some people you may have similar experiences to the participants on the documentary and although this can be relatable and helpful, some may find this triggering. If you find yourself feeling triggered by any content on the documentary, take a short break to ground yourself and we can also help support you on on the forums .

After you have viewed the next episode be sure to come back onto the forums as we will have @Iamlucas000 once again, whom is a participant on the documentary to answer some of your questions around gambling addiction. :D @Iamlucas000 has kindly volunteered to be a part of the discussion with you all :D

Take note of any themes you feel are important to focus on and any questions you may have throughout.

Also if you have missed last weeks episode you can view it on the SBS website or app.

My journey since airing / appearing on the docco has been a really positive time, there has been a hell of a lot of people just reaching out who I have hardly spoke to in years and having honest engaged conversations where we talk about it rather than just doing a check in and then a quick pat on the back. Since Starting the actual treatment, it has been a whirlwind, this started just over 12 months ago whilst it was a frustrating time, it was also the most rewarding time of my life. I remember feeling so liberated from March - July, just milestone after milestone.

@Clouds21 like any recovery, there was losses along the way, each one got easier to deal with because I started to think of my gambling only as my last experience, not my total experience, i stopped taking it so personal each time I lost. Gambling was a way of punishing my self, once I started to find a bit more respect for my self, the amount of times I gambled dwindled. I still gambled a few times after that, one major loss a couple months later, then nothing really major of note, but that time before christmas really put a few things into perspective and was the first time I did not beat my self up over a loss. Not always smooth at all just like most recovery, I knew mine was never going to be one and done, it was always going to just slowly die out if I kept putting in as much effort as I was.

It really is about progress and not beating ourselves up at the lapses. Did you feel anymore pressure to stop and even mention that you might have gambled when you were being filmed?

No pressure at all was felt and I did not feel a need to hide, I knew if I started hiding my losses, then there was no point being there. I was there to get better and as soon as I contemplated saying nothing, I knew I had to say something if I actually wanted to progress. I had to keep the conversation going, hiding it is what cause it to get so deep in the first place. Part of the attraction of doing the show was to have accountability, I had no one to reason with me before hand or really even talk to about when I had a loss, so I really relished that chance to talk about the losses in depth

"I was there to get better" a really good way to think about it. It sounds like just signing up to the show was about being accountable to yourself... making sure you reflected on your gambling with support no matter who was watching.

Hi @lamlucas000 good to see you are doing well. What was the most difficult part of working through the gambling addiction and how did you overcome the difficulties?
