Won it all and lost it all within a week. Time to change.

    Fri Apr 09, 2021 12:04 am

    I am 22 years old.

Two weeks ago I hit a grand jackpot at the Star Casino. I remember turning to someone and saying "I really needed that" as my savings were already being hurt by my gambling addiction. I left the casino feeling like I had finally done it. I had finally defeated the beast that had taken all my savings and time away for the better part of the last two years.

Well...as you can probably tell that thought was fleeting because I am here now with about $0.80 to my name. I have money coming in from jobs over the next week so I'll be ok, but this time I can only ask myself "for how long?".

I have struggled to save money my whole life, and I have finally come to the realisation that my addiction is costing me everything. Besides money, it is taking up my days.

Today I lost the remainder of my money and today I am choosing to make an immediate change. Two months ago I took my last drag of a cigarette and said no more. I plan to do the same with gambling.

I look forward to sharing my stories and hearing from people with similar experiences. This site has made me feel less lonely whilst dealing with an addiction that is incredible lonely.

Any tips on how to go "cold turkey" on gambling. My main vices are pokies and horse racing.

Bring on the next 100 days!

Good luck DH. You've made the right call while still very young. Reading what people have been through on this forum along with gambler's anonymous meetings have helped me a great deal.

    All the best

Get yourself excluded from the venues you frequent. And if you can hand control of you're finances to someone you can trust do that.

There's no magical answer or solution. I been fighting the gambling monster for over a qaurter of a century. It goes round in cycles. Pokies are my poison.

Actually fallen back in the hole the last month, I'm lucky my commitments chew up a lot of my income, but I can still cause some damage.

Hi @DH123 ! Welcome to the forums!
Really glad to see that you are ready to kick the gambling habit! :)
Take one day at a time.
Try to write down some short term and long term goals and also figure out different ways to prepare for when those urges come about.
