    Franks 100 Day Challenge - 31-10-19 - Forever.. I hope

    Thu Oct 31, 2019 4:05 am

    Hi all,

After reading so many inspiring journeys on here I have decided to post my own.
Hopefully it will help motivate me to finally quit and also track my progress.

I am 29 years old and have been addicted to pokie machines for the past 10 years.
What started as a casual hobby with my father has turned in to a destructive addiction.

I have been in denial for years about the severity and only more recently realised the effects it has had on me socially, mentally, physically and the obvious one financially.

    Wish me luck

Any advice/ support would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Frank321

I'm Calvin one of the facilitators here on the forums.

Good on you for sharing your experiences on the forums.
Pokies and gambling in general can have a dramatic impact on all aspects of our lives and can be really difficult to deal with at times.
I would encourage you to have a closer look at identifying what your main urges are to gamble. For some people its financial i.e chasing losses, for some its stress, boredom etc. Theres many different reasons that motivate people to gamble.
Have you thought about seeing a gambling counsellor? Not only can get you get some ongoing support from them you can also get some self-exclusion organised where you can ban yourself from up to 35 different venues.

    Kind regards,

    Calvin.

    Hi Calvin,
    Thanks for replying.

In the past I have tried to pin point my triggers but honestly I would make any excuse to play.
Whether I'm stressed, happy or bored.
One thing for certain was l would leave feeling angry and ashamed

Thank you for suggesting a gambling counsellor.
Prior to signing up to this site I never realised there was such a thing.
If I relapse, contacting a counsellor will be the first thing I do.

    I actually feel confident.
I've suspended all betting apps, combined bank accounts with my partner and started new hobbies.

Just reading other posts and even your comment.
Knowing theres other people going through the same struggle and willing to help, means alot.

    Hi BrittV,

    Thanks for touching base
It's been 10 days since starting and I have struggled a couple of times especially Melbourne Cup and catching up at the pub with mates

I've tried to keep busy working extra shifts and spending my spare time exercising.
Though the temptation is always in the back of my mind

Fingers crossed I can stick at it

Getting through the Cup is something you should be really proud of :)

Sound like you've also got some great ideas about using your time. Extra shifts is always great for the extra cash too of course.
Have you put some barriers in place for those times of temptation?
This list of our community's strategies might be helpful if you havent seen it?

    Hey Frank,

I'm the same gamble when I'm depressed, bored, lonely, happy, feeling lucky etc

I also have come to the realization socially how much my gambling has affected me.
It's a given I've screwed myself financially and mentally by this, but I've realized I have no real friends and I guess that's my fault I would always blow my money and bail on events.

Well done on coming here and ready to give it a good go! All the best on your journey, if you stuff up, start again no matter how many times it takes.
