Real time chat

Hi facilitators,

Was just wondering if there was any option for real time chat with members on here?
I know you can chat with a counseller on here, but tbh I think real time chat with other members would be way more beneficial for some members.

I'm not even sure how many members access the chat with counsellors.

I know you can private message members on here, but I think chat would be great. Obviously for those that want to.

I have been coming on here a bit lately, there doesn't seem to be that much activity.
It's great to post and reply, but there's no immediate interaction.

I think so many would get a lot out of being able to talk to others in a conversation, especially if it's coming here desperate or a time they feel weak and about to gamble.

And I have to say I've got more out of this forum reading and posting than I ever have at counseling (gambling counseling that is)
To be able to real time chat like messenger I think would help even more.

Hey Dragon,

That would be great for you to suggest.
Just for people wanting to chat, as when you are a gambler or closet gambler if you are feeling down or **** you can't talk to your friends or family if they don't know.

And if your loved ones do know, and you have promised them to not gamble again and you lapse, you can't talk to them either, especially if it was the last straw for the family if you gambled again.

I love this forum and it has helped heaps, but the problem is, if you post you may not get a response for a while sometimes.

I've not long come back, but that for me is the reason when I come on I always try to do as many support messages to other posts as possible.

I agree, a real time chat messenger option would be fantastic.
I have recently been asked to call people who are struggling which I am not too comfortable doing.
This would help solve that issue and would give those in need a platform to chat to someone immediately.

Good to hear the suggestions everyone. Thankyou for sharing your thoughts.
Just a reminder that you can get in touch via the Gamblers Helpline Webchat which is also live.
Although it isn't a peer to peer support chat, it can provide some counselling and support 24 hours a day, especially for those times where you feel most vulnerable.

Kind regards,

by clearthatmind is the peer to peer support chat going? Is it at least in the pipeline? It would be nice to be updated on this. If it is a no-go then just let us know. If it is going to go ahead then great. Just let us know when and how. That would be great.

Hi @clearthatmind,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you on this. As mentioned I do really love hearing ways people love to enhance the services.

What was said about wanting to be able to chat with people when you don't feel that you can talk to those around you at the time is something we really hope that we are creating the space for here! Having a space to connect, free of shame and judgement, is absolutely our intention. Part of this is ensuring that it's also a safe environment.

We're consistently working on ways in which we can assist in the flow of the public threads. When the forums were first created posts waited for approval from facilitators before going live, to check that the content was appropriate, but we were glad to change to instant-live posts to help this. Last year we received feedback that members wanted a better system for knowing when they had replies / new posts in subscribed forums, so we introduced the notification system in the top of the page. We are always eager to assist in the flow of discussions for easier response.

There are a couple of concerns with live chat though unfortunately. When private message was available there was feedback that members felt pressure to support people, when perhaps they themselves weren't going so good, or if someone was quite desperate they felt quite "over their head" to support them, which would be a similar experience for chat. In times like this, it's awesome to know that other members of the community can jump into discussions to add support, and also that there are facilitators available to step in as required. They're also there to ensure there's no concerning content being discussed.

Instead though, there are a couple of ideas of threads we could create that I'd love yours and everyone's feedback on. I think they provide a similar type of experience.
  • Virtual catch up - We could be proactive in picking a time of the week where those who feel like if can come online and join in the thread, and check in for the week. Almost like a virtual coffee catch up. It would mean there's a time of the week where, if it suits you, you can come online and know there will be others in the thread around to talk with, so there's a little more flow? Eg. Sundays 4 - 6pm or something.. obviously we could think about what works for everyone.
  • Riding the urge thread - We could create a thread where people can come and post when they've got an urge to gamble, and let the community know they're struggling at that moment, and others could reply messages of support, or chat about something else to get distracted. We could even have some ideas there for distractions as well perhaps, like a little tool kit for those tough moments, and all keep adding to it.
  • Social space thread - What about the idea of a long-standing thread that's more about connecting with one another in a more social discussion way. For those moments where you want to maybe check in, say hey to everyone, and see who's around. Building friendships with one another, even talking about things outside gambling, can help build connection with one another, and can be great for those moments where you don't feel like going into the "heavier" chats too much?
I've love your feedback on these!? What does everyone think?

It's worth mentioning too that the forum is everyone's space. Please don't hesitate to create new threads, make mini events/topics, or coordinate times to be online. We love seeing community members making the space their own!

I know it's not quite the same as the instant chat, I hope that you understand that it's just not a safe option at this time, but that you let me know your thoughts on these thread ideas.
If you're not comfortable giving feedback here, you can always reach us by sending a private message to @TheTeam!

Thanks again for your enthusiasm & feedback!
