Mothers 10 year addiction then loosing her soul mate

    Sat Mar 14, 2020 2:51 am

    Who: Mum & Dad
    How long: 10 years
    Place: casino
    Type: pokies
In the first few years it was only once or twice a week but then it would be 3 or 4 times a week. Going at odd hours like 3am, 4am and would be there for 4+ hours at a time.
Dad passed in December 2019 their visits were sometimes 4/5 times a week towards the end and they BOTH used his diagnosis as an excuse to go.
“He likes going it keeps his mind off it”
“Sometimes I just need to escape”
    “It’s his only joy”
Mum has gotten right back into now plus she’s a mess from loosing Dad, how do we address this with her?
We are an extremely close family but myself, my husband and my sister are taking on so much.
Fixing parents failing business (closing up at the end of financial year), she’s got health issues plus we’re all trying to grieve dad too, be parents, run our households and work.
Pretty much organizing her life but she goes to the casino and blows $500 sometimes at a time, it feels like a kick in the guts.
It’s been so hard to address because of dads diagnosis and now he’s gone we don’t want her to flip out if we bring it up.
She has 2 AMAZING daughters who would do anything for her, a son in law who wants to take care and protect her and 2 grandchildren who think she’s the best Nanna in the world.
Discussing this with her is going to happen but please help with how??
    Thanking all of you

    Hi Westie85,

It's Sherpa09 here, one of the moderators on the forum). You've shown great strength on reaching out. I'm sorry for your recent loss and sounds as though things are really difficult for you and the family right now with your mothers gambling issue. I suggest speaking with peer connection > https://bchs.org.au/services/gambling-s ... onnection/ (PH: 03 9450 2000) who are a service run by people with lived experience or carers of people who have experienced various gambling issues.

Otherwise you can contact Gamblers Help (1800 858 858) who are trained problem gambling counselor's who can help unpack what might be happening for you right now and how to approach communicating with your mother.

If there's anyone out there who has experienced a similar situation to Westie, it would be great to hear your thoughts on how you've been able to cope or simply share your story

Well done again on seeking support and look forward to your future posts :)
