Why can’t they ban online betting!

    Sat Sep 01, 2018 4:02 pm

I am at my absolute end.. I honestly do not know what to do anymore.

Long story short- my partner has a huge history o online gambling. Like $95000 loss in total, has stolen from me, his father and his own business to fund his addiction. Each time I have stood by him. We have started the process and after a huge battle managed to get a life time exclusion from sportsbet. I was silly enough to believe that was the end of it.

Well not at all! Williamhills changed platform and the constant adverts on Telly have made his habit come back. It makes me sick and so mad that they are allowed to advertise so frequently. Also to have paypal linked is disgusting!! So I sit here today after realizing he hasn’t paid rent and he denies he is even gambling again worrying about what the future holds.

    I hate online betting!!

    Hi Concerned Partner...

l am so sorry for your dilemma.. I really am! I do not have an answer for you but I do agree with the advertising... I am seeing more & more on television! I'm not a big fan of sports but have taken an interest because my grandson's other half are mad on sports culture!

l am a pokies addict, and had been gamble free for nearly 9 months and had a minor slip. now its one & half months since...

Some thing odd I'Ve noticed when I'm in YouTube is casino adverts... I don't play online at all ... SO I'm curious as to Why these pop up. .. only connection I can make is that I've watch anti-gamble documentaries . .., , So I really feel for people addicted to online gambling... especially that we depend on our devices nowadays.

These gambling demons are cunning bloody creatures! And the government really needs to pulls its Knickers up and do something about it! But we don't have a great deal to say because the government loves collecting money from them!

If your husband had excluded from gambling apps... p-s. I'm not familiar with the procedure so apologise in advance,.. but if -gambling had been blocked from his devices... and he managed to get back in ... would this call for some form of legal action? There must be some legal responsibility on the side of the "demons" (bookies?) concerned when a person "excludes for a lifetime" ...

Give the gamb helpline a call on 1800 858 858... they are wonderful people and very learnt on these issues... and they can advice you on the best course of action AND it helps to unload too!

I really hope you and your partner are able to fight through this...

Wishing you all the best! stay strong!

    Mona

(Why the heck are they even called "bookmakers" ??)

    Hello Concernedpartner17,

I'm Calvin, one of the Gamblers Help Online moderators,
Good on you for getting into touch with the forums, it is a good way to receive advice and some support from members with similar experiences.
It is often so difficult for people in your position, because you can often feel helpless on what to do next.
I do agree with you in regards to the overflow of advertisements for gambling organisations. It is a risk factor for those that are stopping gambling or trying to stop their gambling.

Is there a way you can have a discussion with him about you or someone else being able to manage his accounts to restrict him from having access to large amounts of money?

Please call gamblers helpline or get in touch via our webchat if you feel like you need extra support.

    Take care,

    Calvin

Hi @ConcernedPartner17 totally agree online betting and advertisements suck. Problem is the government will never ban it, it makes them too much money. There is software I think that you can download to stop all access to online apps on your phone. I think it does cost a small amount of money but compared to what your partner spends on gambling it would make more sense to get the software. He has to want to do this himself though..he will find a way around things if he really wants to continue gambling.
How do you focus on yourself??? I have realised that the more you focus on him and his addiction the more likely you will lose yourself. This has definitely happened to me and it’s a struggle to rebuild your life and self worth after living in a unhealthy environment.
All I can say is seek help for yourself, set some strong boundaries, expect lies and deceit while he is in active addiction and focus your energy on you, you and only you.
    Take care…❤️

My partner would have disagreed with you wholeheartedly in the past. He was an avid poker player and sportsbettor and he made a lot of money. He also contributed to some gambling sites, including Coinbuzz, AskGamblers, and Pokerstars. My father had problems and I was never too fond about gambling. my partner knew this and was always happy to show me his profits and losses to prove that he was in the black.

He used to insist that problem gamblers were suckers and that he was fine and could even make a profit out of it if he wanted. He started to gamble a lot more, and then I noticed his personality change. He still insisted all was well, but he stopped showing me his profits and loss.

He also had an account that he was using just to put his gambling profits it. Kinda like a bankroll. He insisted he had $20,000 in there and promised that we'd cash it out and use it for a new home deposit when it passed $50,000.

A few years into this, I discovered the account was overdrawn by $2k and he had over $30,000 of debt elsewhere. Turns out he had been successful playing poker initially (that's what he showed me) but he was losign heavily everywhere else.

I know there are a lot of others who insist that you can gamble a lot and still be okay, I disagree. I've seen it first-hand and know the risks. I do beleive that a lot of people can be okay gambling small amounts, and I suppose that's why online gambling is still legal, but if you're doing it every day...you have a problem and the sites should be stopping players like that.
