Morning, well done on yesterday breaking habits at the start is hard. You actually have to stop and think about it, our brain must go into a bit of shock and go "hang on a minute ".

Have you got plans in place for today? Sunday's were my bad days i have to admit.
But the 1st weekend are fairly crap, and did i read that you haven't told your partner that you are back gambling?
That makes it harder for you as well. But we are all here if you need us.
Much strength to you on this glorious GF Sunday 😊

Thanks everyone had strong urges this morning cos my usual habit was to head straight there after work but managed to come home and do some gardening and wash the car , safe for another day . Mongoose

Hi Mongoose,

One of the things I found that worked for me was changing the way I did my banking. I have 2 cards (different banks). I have a small amount direct debited from one bank to the other and is not available till the afternoon the following day. I use one card to do my shopping leaving the other at home ' shopping done I would then swap cards and only use the touch card the rest of the time. I also carry just a small amount of cash on me. I try and ignore looking at the balance because when I do it makes me get nervous! (hence the recent lapse I had)

Making changes to routes ... shopping elsewhere ... etc also helps with being mindful of what you are doing.

It also helps to have the daily sms txt messages from Gamb help to keep focused.

All the best Mongoose. I too have been on and off this rollercoaster. Too many times to mention but getting better each time. I will be at week 4 on saturday. I find my weekends are the worse. I work during the week so no time to think about gambling. I have found if I plan a list of activities to complete on the weekend I dont fall in to the trap of having spare time to gamble. My husband is away all day Saturday so I need to be extra vigilant not to think about gambling. I am currently writing my list of activities for the weekend. My list for Saturday so far is: walk my dog, try new recipe I found in womans day - mini shepherds pies with cheesy potato topping, finish sewing the back on the santa stocking I am making, finish the macrame dream catcher I started during the week. Sunday: walk my dog, try a new recipe for dog biscuits (I have a bone shaped cookie cutter) and spend the rest of the day in the garden (Heaps of weeding needs to be done , finish pruning my roses and water the garden). Definitely no room in the weekend for gambling !!

Thanks everyone for your fantastic support still have remained to keep away and staying focused on the challenge ahead ,reading your stories of courage makes me feel that I can do this but my biggest challenge is going to be the weekend ahead . Staying positive Mongoose

Hows it going mongoose? Have to admit it's horrible at the start but if you dig your heels in and stay strong you will defeat this.
Have you got any plans in place to help with your blocks?

Hi Mongoose,

You've hit the nail on the head, gambling is a vicious cycle that is tough to break away from, and what Pamela said about taking it a day at a time is very important. A quote I really like is: The urge is like a cat, if you feed the cat the cat will keep coming back. If you stop feeding the cat, eventually it will stop coming back.

In these early stages (and throughout your journey), it's good to ask yourself, 'what's motivating me to break out of this cycle?' and 'what could I try differently this time so that if the urge comes on I have a plan in place'.

Keep using the forums for support, and if you start to feel the urge to gamble call Gambler's Helpline again on 1800 858 858, as the urge does pass and this can be helped by talking through it with a counsellor beforehand.
