I like the Bunnings workshop idea, I have always meant to do that and you just reminded me, Thankyou.

The problem at the moment Is that it is so hot that it is hard to stay at home and do the things I should do - like housework etc, and the casino is air conditioned and has cheap food and drinks (unfortunately I probably spend a lot more if I go there.

I have joined a fitness passport which is less than $12 a week and I have already gone to the gym a few times and taken a few classes - yoga, Pilates and body combat. Unfortunately the yoga was quite hard instead of relaxing! So not free, but a lot cheaper than one visit to the casino and the gyms are air conditioned. I can go to more than one gym and swimming pools, so it is great value.

I really enjoy going to brekky near our beach or for a coffee but don't have people to do this with regularly, which is another reason I go to the casino as my mum likes to go there or I can go by myself.

I have been seeing bands a bit lately - I flew down south to see 2 bands, will go to a local folk club on Thursday night as a friend is going with her family (it is child friendly) and have been invited to a local festival in a month or so. I'm also looking for someone to see a visiting band with me in a couple of months - making an effort to get out to live music but it is hard at my age finding friends to go with.

I could spend more time at home improving my environment but that might have to wait until the weather is cooler. There is Also work! I do also dream of being a crime writer, or writer of mysteries.

markets - we have a vintage market, renegade handmade market and cotter's market, but these are very hot at the moment so I have stopped going recently, as they are outdoors.

Thanks for the ideas and for prompting me to think of activities and be more positive.

-Love the learning musical instrument idea, although I worry that I am too old.
-I also liked the drawing/painting class idea and have been thinking of doing this although I am not a good artist
- go to a park of beach etc and paint or draw
-Dancing. (even to music at home while doing housework)
-Listen to music - this is one of the easiest ways to lift your mood and get motivated to do things.
-Research any of your desired topics on the Internet or at the library,
-Libraries often have free workshops and events you can attend
-Join a book club - ask at the library
- reading, as someone else mentioned, takes us into other worlds
-Watch a movie
-Visit local events such as food truck fiestas, cultural fests, eco fiestas and Chinese New Year festivals
-Hike or walk along the beach in bare feet
-Learn a new app
-start a blog
-get out and take photos
-Social networking
- visit an art gallery if there Is one nearby
- go camping
- dream and remember what you used to dream about doing, can you make an old dream a reality?
- catch up with friends or relatives you haven't seen in a while - even on the phone or with Skype.

I've only just started here so I've been thinking about other activities to occupy my mind. I see some fantastic ideas here which is great.
I'm partial to drawing myself. it is a passion I've had since I was a kid. However with all my spare time taken up with gambling or thinking about gambling it has something that I have not been able to focus on. I look forward to rediscovering this passion once again.
I also find a round of golf very relaxing if not somewhat frustrating..LOL...

its really hard to know what is good. when im depressed from losses nothing ill work for me.

Hi Earth,

It's really hard to feel passionate about something after a big loss. I think it is easier to find alternatives to gambling first. Often this takes planning. A lot of people don't think about what they are going to do instead of gambling until they have a urge. It works much better to identify your high risk times and to plan activities for them in advance.

Know you will be tempted to gamble on payday? Organise dinner with a friend that day, or buy tickets to a show (Cheaper than gambling).

It's by planning ahead that we can beat cravings.

What do you think you can do to beat your next craving?

Hey guys I have plenty of things to keep me busy eg 2year old border Collie Gardening business my problem is my thoughts and feelings that come with them I use gambling to escape my mind and feelings or stress any suggestions?

Hi Pat23,

You raise a really good point actually, and something that often needs to be explored before one can know how to effectively manage urges! I would consider two parts when answering you:

1. What is my motivation to gamble - you mentioned stress...is it a way to escape these other things that consume a lot of your time?

2. What do you think are your urges to gamble? - I often ask people to separate them into two groups:

Internal - what are the thoughts and feelings that trigger you to gamble? - Thoughts are things like "I deserve it", "Just one game" etc, the things you tell yourself, even though they may sound ridiculous! The second part is feelings - what emotions do you find that trigger your gambling? Feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety, boredom, happiness etc?

External - what are the things that occur in the environment around you that may lead you to gamble? Some examples are: certain people, payday etc

Write down some ideas, and see what you have. Your answers will help you to know what triggers you need to work on (with some help of course!)

just been reading through some of these posts.
so many good ideas...
I used to play pokies as a substitute for going out .
I thought I was socializing.
A way for an introvert to feel like there out there.
After reading here I decided to break it into 2 categories

1.things to do instead when I'm by myself (which is most of the time)

2.things I can add to get me out there involved with others.

ill probably have more ones than twos
but that's ok.

right now my playstation is king.

or something like that.

Excellent ideas everyone!

Don't forget to carve out some time in your day for self care too. Even 20 minutes where you might read a book, listen to relaxing music, take a hot bath / shower, colour in, go for a walk, make a nice meal, paint, draw, dance, create, knit, walk the dog, pet the cat, get your hair done - there are so many ideas and the point is we all need to make ourselves a priority.
