Hi Debsta, your doing well but like your heading says, " gambling has destroyed my life" why take a risk on any type of gambling. Being at the casino is probably going to be very very difficult ( it would for me) personally I would take no $$ just get some one in the family to pay for your meal and drinks then transfer them the $$ the next day If possible. Keep strong and mindful while there but have a great time.

What happens if you try some other type of gambling and you find that you really like it?

HI Deb,

I think you are mistaken. You are not doing it just by willpower alone. People that do that rarely do as well as you.
You are using many more strategies.

-Cognitive techniques (Talking yourself out of going gambling)
-You are educating yourself about how gambling works
-Learning about your own triggers for gambling urges
-Planning strategies in advance on how to cope with urges you know are likely.
-You are finding alternatives to gambling: reading, garage sales, op shopping, exercise, planning and looking forward to holidays.

You are using many more strategies than "Just willpower".

And that is why you are doing great :)

Hi Jerry, Thanks for your input, reading all you wrote and you are dead right lol.
I havent self excluded as yet but havent felt the need. I looked into Ga Meetings and there is 1 a week where i live but it is on a night that i play eightball competition, I am scared **** of a relapse but in saying that feel strong enough at the moment that its not going to happen. Maybe i am fooling myself, i dunno. Its funny though as i feel almost like a different person altogether, i feel strong, i feel secure, i feel in control of my life and i feel very happy and empowered. Maybe i have an angel on my shoulder as this strength in me hasnt reared its head since i was in my 20 haha. So i will keep logging on here, keep telling anyone that will listen of my progress and hope to inspire others.

Hi Debsta, first I would like to say "Well done!" This is my first day on the forum, and I have found your story both familiar and inspiring - even down to the PTSD and the family history. I also have been thinking about GA but am frankly terrified. I have recently been through a gambling counselling program through which I gained a whole lot of self-awareness, plus strategies to manage urges; it was well worth doing. I'm still a work in progress, but I hope we can go on this journey to the recovery of our REAL lives together. :o
