Let the 2018 be my GF year!

18.1.2018
I decided to start counting my GF challenge from today. After admitting to my husband about my gambling problem, his empathy was given. The debt has all been cleared by my husband. The access to money has been removed from me.
My first step I take today:
- I called the Hotline to get help and referral to a counsellor. The responding time was very slow and I nearly hung up but I didn't. I will have a phone pre-assessment tomorrow before they schedule a counselling session for me.
- I fill my free time with a few activities (volunteering, reading, studying) to distract me from gambling.
- I will ban myself from all online betting at the end of the month (once I get paid). It came to my surprise that to do this I need to pay $80 to block all the online gambling sites. The Helpline staff told me to register and pay fees at https://www.gamblock.com Anyone did it before?
- I am considering getting a referral from my GP to access a psychologist who is specialised in addiction. This was recommended by the Helpline staff. It is subsidised by Medicare for the six sessions. I will see a counsellor first but I think it may be good to understand the root of my problematic behaviour.

I dare to make 2018 different!

Goodgolly, $80.00 to block yourself from online gambling. That’s criminal (like pokies) and should be free.

Well done on your dare for 2018. You have done everything that was suggested to you.

I wish you all the strength that you can muster. Be strong. You’ve got this!!!

I think sports betting apps are criminal.
Any form of gambling should be on a premises that has RCG licencing - not available for you anywhere anytime.
As for the $80 blocking fee? That is ridiculous.
I never had an addiction to this type of gambling so I can't give you any other advice sorry
Maybe your bank could block transactions towards your betting accounts? and then just delete the apps, not sure how effective that could be.

It's a good step to limit your access to money and it's great that your husband has been so supportive. Good luck with your GF journey and keep checking in and posting on these forums, they are a great source of advice and motivation.

Hi Jasmine,

I just thought I would talk a little about online banning.

So every gambling website based in Australia is required to block people that ask to be removed from the gambling mailing list. You can just close your account permanently. Each website has a different way of doing this.

But that's just for websites based in Australia.

Websites originating from other countries don't need to abide by Australian law. So for those, you can ask to be removed, and they can continue to send you advertising.

The only way to stop that is with Gambling blocking programs. Blocking gambling programs is quite complicated and takes a lot of effort on the part of the programmers. The government doesn't fund their work, so they are forced to charge fees.

Gamblock is not the only one out there, you can also try:
www.betfilter.com
www.Netnanny.com
gamban.com

It is unfortunate that blocking gambling on an international level tends to cost money, but that's how it is.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Jerry for explaining. Now it makes sense as I was quite surprised with the fee of blocking the sites.
I agree it's hard when you can just sit anywhere and place your bet online. Even with a strong will, I imagine one would fall.
I didn't know that we could contact the bank and block the gambling transactions. Thanks Oregon for telling me this.
I talked with the helpline again today as the counselling appointment is not until first week of Feb. Talking to someone about why I gambled and so on is really reflective and helpful.

Hi,
I haven't been counting my days since last posting but all go well. Been busy with some shores and went away for a camping which was fabulous. So far so good. Debt free and intend to stay that way :D

Oh I also started a dairy of gratitude to remind myself how good my life is and it deserves to be that way.
