Day 1 nearly done PHEW!!

Postby Free4Good » Thu Jun 29, 2017 11:16 pm

Hey all,

I have nearly completed 24hrs with no pokies, no free apps, no online. I would spend my night hunting down free chips on online casinos or depositing to the best deal. But not tonight and I have to thank a lot of that to this web page. Every time I felt on urge to play I would login and read your stories, your sadness and your successes. You all give me strength so thank you.

Just need to repeat it 99 more times and I will be extremely happy.

Day 2

Feeling flat, bored, just "BLaH" not giving in though. Just feel so drained. I was feeling motivated yesterday but today just want to hide.

Kept on swimming

Hi Free4Good,

Well done on your progress away from gambling!

It sounds like your motivation has shifted, and this can certainly happen when making change. Try not to be too hard on yourself, you are making change which takes courage and is difficult!
I am wondering what you can put in place to improve your mood? The difficulty when we are not feeling motivated, and when we have no energy and feel drained, is that we are not just going to suddenly become motivated, it is important to schedule in meaningful activities to help us move from that space. Is there something that you are finding helpful in managing your urges to gamble?

I am wondering if others can relate to how Free4Good is feeling, and if anyone can offer advice on what helped build motivation?

It is great to hear that you have got a lot out of this forum and reading the stories of others.

All the best,
Miette (GH).

Hello Free4Good,
Welcome to this forum and well done for beginning the 100 day challenge!
It's definitely a hard slog the first few days and weeks as our brains crave the dopamine it normally would be getting through our gambling and all the other little triggers they brainwash us with... Your effectively coming down.
I struggled through the first days quite depressed and withdrawn but luckily for me I had no access to cash to act upon my impulses...
Aim to fill your spare time up with other activities, get on here and read/post, speak to a councillor if you need extra support. Basically try to go out and slowly reclaim your life back from this horrible addiction.

Your doing well, just take it one day at a time.
I wish you well with your challenge.
Cheers, Lee

Thanks Family First,

Yes definitely feels like that "coming down" and thankfully I don't have access to cash either. I am back to work tomorrow so that will take my mind off things. . Somehow the last 2 days have felt worse than the other times I don't know why? Possibly cause I have finally had enough of the guilt or I want to rid myself of this disgusting habit and have taken more action this time by posting and joining the challenge maybe that's why I feel super low? I just haven't been able to focus at all today even had a daytime nap. Maybe the depression, or reading the forums and relating to so many cause I have done it for so long I don't know.

Day 3,

well managed some sleep, feeling a bit better today not much though. I have no money to do anything so at home I sit a think of all my mistakes. I have work this afternoon so that is a distraction. I never want to waste another cent on gambling. Reading the forums on GH really help. I have debt collectors ringing us constantly and I have nothing to give, I couldn't catch up even if I tried. I don't want to go into a debt agreement but it's looking more and more the outcome that will be.

Thats makes me extremely annoyed. Yet i allowed it to get this bad....

Day 4,

Hard last night as I got home from work late and while everyone is sleeping I usually get online. Was really hard to fight urges but glad I did. Frustrated today with anything and everything like I was craving a cigarette but of course I feel its withdrawal of the machine.

Day 4 is great, keep up the good work.

It sounds like you are struggling with urges at the moment.
Do you have a list of things that you can do to distract yourself when you have the urge to gamble?

I like to think of gambling as a hobby (a terribly destructive hobby, but a hobby none the less).
It is much easier to remove a hobby if you have a new one to replace it with.

What are you doing with the time you used to spend gambling?

Hey Jerry,

I do struggle with the urges and no I haven't made activities, to keep me distracted. I usually have my hands full with my household and if it's been busy I am fine. When I am at my worst, is late at night when family is sleeping, or when they are settled I just grab a few minutes on my own but I have had times were I have just played all day and night being easily accessible online.
If that makes sense

Day 5 today

Hi Free4good,

It sounds like you have trouble when you are alone late at night. It can be hard to find alternatives to gambling in those situations (But not impossible).

If you found something that you could do late at night when your family are sleeping, do you think that could eventually become your new habit?
